Automating Patch Management for a Large Regional Bank
In this case study we evaluate a challenge, solution and benefits of automating patch management for a large regional bank IT department.
INDUSTRY: FINANCIAL SERVICES
INDUSTRY APPROPRIATE: ANY INDUSTRY
DEPARTMENT: IT
Challenge:
The large software providers routinely release updates to their products that require orchestrated and controlled releases, usually in the weekend, where various IT personnel are required to come in and monitor the release. In the case of the customer, they brought on 15 people for patch weekend. They sought a solution to eliminate the need to bring in people for the patching.
Solution:
The Odyssey Digital Automation Platform was configured to create the required solution. With Odyssey inbuilt audit trail, everything that happens in the process is recorded. Odyssey is set-up to know where the patches are stored to be used. Prior to starting the patching process, Odyssey takes an image of the server. Odyssey then applies the patch and once applied tests the patch and server to ensure everything is working properly. If everything is good, it moves forward. If there is an issue, Odyssey rolls the server back to the last good instance and then notifies the proper IT professional of the issue so the patch can be addressed.
Benefits:
- Higher morale in the IT group as they do not have to work weekends.
- Lower the overall risk of the patching process as it is a repeatable automated process.
- Cost savings on overtime.
- Exception processing if there is an issue while allowing the rest of the servers to move forward.
