Automated Code-Graduation to Production

IT AutomationIn this case study we look at an automated code-graduation to production from Dev and QA for a Large Regional Bank.

INDUSTRY: FINANCIAL SERVICES
INDUSTRY APPROPRIATE: ANY INDUSTRY WHERE THERE IS APPLICATIONS/CODE DEVELOPMENT.
DEPARTMENT: IT

Challenge:

As part of the IT operations process, newly created code needs to be “elevated” or moved from the development environment to QA environment for validation, and then to the production environment for use. This includes a series of not only validating the code and eliminating bugs, etc., but also carefully orchestrated ensure the proper approvals have been received and that nothing beaks along the way. The Bank was looking for a way to automate the process while also automating the approvals needed along the workflow outside of the emails and phone calls currently used and adding delays in the release process.

Solution:

Odyssey was configured to identified the code to be moved to the various levels of review and ultimate release. As part of this, workflows were put in place in Odyssey to seek approvals, which could come in the form of emails, text messages and/or in the Odyssey application. All information required to decide to approve or reject is provided, and the approver can simply type “approved” to move forward or “reject” to send it back to the requester to make alterations. Upon receiving all of the approvals, Odyssey would back-up the current environment, release the new code and test to ensure all is working properly. If good, it would roll everything forward. If there was an issue, it would roll back to the last good instance and notify the proper people in IT of an issue.

Benefits:

  1. Through automation, the release process was shorten by 60% as many of the approvals were handles much more expeditiously.
  2. Risk of mistaken release or other such mishaps were eliminated.
  3. IT Operations could focus on higher value activities, intervening only when an alert was sent form Odyssey of an issue with specific instructions as to where the break occurred. This allowed the IT Team to more quickly identify and fix the issue.
  4. The overall DevOps process enhanced due to the code movement automation being quicker with approvals more easily obtained.
